When people think of wineries in California, they think of Napa and Sonoma. Many people do not even know that there is a county nestled between and to the north of Napa and Sonoma called Lake County. In Lake County there is a winery named Six Sigma Winery. Six Sigma has now taken one of the top ranks as a California winery for me.
The winemaker does an excellent job of making luscious and full bodied Cabs and Syrah. They have wines that have 90+ point wine scores. On our WineMaester Rating, Six Sigma gets a 5 star rating.
So, what makes their wine so good? I believe it is their mindset. They make wines to be enjoyed with friends!
With a background in math and statistics, Six Sigma Ranch’s owner Kaj Ahlmann mastered Six Sigma techniques while he rose through the ranks of General Electric’s reinsurance group. He saw the benefits of the methods across various business units of GE, and he was convinced that Six Sigma held great potential for winemaking as well. He was so sure of it that he chose to name the family ranch, which would later include a winery, after the Six Sigma process that he utilizes in the business today. And I think it shows in the quality of the wines!
Six Sigma Ranch & Winery is located south of Lower Lake in Lake County, California. The winery is less than an hour drive north of Napa Valley, and approximately 100 miles from San Francisco and Sacramento. Six Sigma Ranch has 40 acres of high-altitude vineyards, placed among thousands of oak trees. The vineyards stand between 1400 and 1700 feet in elevation. Besides exquisite wines, Six Sigma also sells ranch raised pastured beef, lamb and pork.
